2026 Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
While I found the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Amphibians have been anything but new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. Yet, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a consistent rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming appears especially powerful.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
In my opinion, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs offer natural design advantages for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues facilitate a wide array of unique mechanics.
Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year so far.
When these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be entering a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
