‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to scoring with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta competed in the UK, an young playing for the youth squad against German opponents at Adams Park in September 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he took the field in the country, against Sunderland weeks after, he netted. The third time, against Manchester City six weeks after that, well, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to face United at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, as well. “In fact,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: they took him off.
“I was furious,” the forward admits, and then he starts laughing. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was in fine form. They didn’t let me play the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I was scoring goals, many stories circulated, you know how it is. I don’t know about Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, the usual talk. I have no idea how true it was, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the facility, Bilbao, the morning session is ready to commence; following that, the brief trip to the airport and another trip to England, now to play Newcastle in the UCL on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. It has become a challenging campaign for the club, due in part to the requirements of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and the German side in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and he feels a calm gratitude about him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, prevented from reaching the showpiece event by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge along the Nervión river flanked by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the team’s initial silverware in 40 years. Now he is the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are unique and returning after absence in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he says.
He considered it difficult enough just to make the first team and he was right. As the child of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that nurtured the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he suffered a ACL injury, being released, a relegation and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to experience the peak of his career.
“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the first team but every phase you go through you’re persisting and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his bow and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances with them and my knee gave way.
“A severe disappointment but I look back on it as something positive because it forced me to alter the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is difficult, but it helps. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then return home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, correct it. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All the minor details: execute them.
“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”
You also have to play. Guruzeta departed upset in the pandemic season, aged 23, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: loans, terminated contracts. If you turn it round, work, believe, and when eventually the requirement appears for your role, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, an aspiration fulfilled. Lifting the cup, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
No wonder he says savor the moment. All the more so after last year which, on occasions, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
