From Solo Parent Holiday Nightmare to House-Sitting Heaven: One Parent's Transformation

Following my relationship concluded, I naively thought vacations being a single parent could be straightforward. Quickly realized they proved often extremely costly, or seemed only designed for “conventional” households, or else were so cheap that I came home more knackered than when I started.

Initial Vacation Attempts

My first attempt, camping with friends, went well up until the moment came to pack up our shelter. Four hours of wrestling with the tent under the sun afterward, I hated camping. Next, an adventurous holiday for solo-parent households. The abseiling and caving were fantastic, but sleeping in a bunkbed wrecked my back. We tried a low-cost all-inclusive in Tenerife, but the hordes of nuclear families were overwhelming, and pool-side conversations with other women died down because I wasn’t accompanied by a convenient husband for their own husbands to chat with. An excursion to Majorca alongside a pal and her kids was brilliant, but the cost was staggering.

Finding House-Sitting

Later, last autumn, an acquaintance asked if we could house-sit her dogs in Devon while she went to a ceremony. During a tranquil couple of days, we walked along the shore, and curled up near the fireplace in the evening. This prompted to house-sitting for her friend in the region, and it also went smoothly. Inspired, I paid an yearly £99 fee to register on a pet-sitting website, where, in exchange for looking after individuals' pets, you reside in their homes without cost. Within a few days, I secured a 10-day pet-sit within the county, caring for a labrador named Buzz during the time the proprietors were abroad.

Our daily strolls gave us the chance to explore breathtaking natural settings.

It was the initial sit for unknown individuals, but all anxiety dissipated as soon as we reached the gorgeous four-bedroom home and encountered the gentle Buzz, who lived for belly scratches. Each day's dog walks offered us the opportunity to explore stunning scenic areas, and, once we returned back, we could unwind outdoors for important discussions about our preferred “Ghosts” characters from the television series. We avoided any expensive overrated attractions to traipse through – rather, we browsed bookstores, treated ourselves to nail care, and embarked on paddling excursions. I experienced more carefree and happier than I had for a long time, and could feel the connection alongside my child Polly strengthen every day. I don’t hesitant to say that I wept with happiness. Things felt possible again.

Is House-Sitting for You?

Pet-sitting may not be for everyone. Certain individuals want zero duties during vacations apart from choosing their upcoming cocktail, are not fond of dogs or cats, or perhaps find it strange about sleeping in a stranger’s bedroom, emptying the dishwasher, and putting out the trash. But the soothing rhythm of everyday living, with work stripped out and fresh locations to investigate, is perfect for me.

This prevents me from descending into total idleness, which makes me experience restless and oddly empty. Moreover, monetarily, pet-sitting acts as a lifeline for a solo mother. Ten days getaway in a comparable property within the identical area we visited could cost me back approximately £2,500 on Airbnb.

An Alternative Outlook

As for residing in a another person’s home, I found it nourishing. Even though house-sitting is a exchange, it is equally an expression of trust between strangers and animals, which has unleashed my best self – my patient, caring and balanced side, overflowing with gratitude for the people and places we discover. I have lined up another four days away, looking after a sighthound in leafy Surrey, and, in the coming year, I hope to try house-sitting overseas. Thanks to a touch of creative thinking, we can see the globe from the coziness of a home – it simply happens to be someone else’s.
