President Trump Abandons Plan to Dispatch Federal Troops to Northern California
The President has called off preparations for a deployment of national agents to the San Francisco Bay Area that had provoked extensive opposition from state officials and drawn demonstrators pouring onto the streets.
Area Tension Over Possible National Presence
The area had been on edge after reports circulated that the government was poised to send more than 100 Customs and Border Protection and other federal agents to the US Coast Guard base in Alameda, as part of a large-scale immigration enforcement initiative.
Leadership Choice Following Talks
However, the national leader announced he would not advance with a “surge” of federal forces in the area after speaking with the city leader, the mayor, and business leaders including tech executive and technology leader.
“During our discussion, the president assured me directly that he was terminating any plans for a government dispatch in the city,” the mayor stated in a release.
