The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Investment Giant.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group for a sum reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the family owners has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to standard regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the land is developed, featuring a substantial array of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
